Parry Sound, island cruises, craft breweries, and more - the best of Georgian Bay is closer than you think.

Killbear Provincial Park is one of Ontario's most beloved camping destinations, and it's easy to see why. We’ve spent more days at Killbear than at any other Ontario provincial park.

With its pink granite shoreline, pine-framed sunsets, and spectacular beaches, it's no wonder Killbear books up fast every season.

But if you only ever pitch your tent or park your trailer, and stay within the park boundary, you’re missing out on one of Georgian Bay’s richest little corners. Just a short drive away, the town of Parry Sound and the surrounding 30,000 Islands region are packed with restaurants, breweries, culture, and adventure worth building a whole day, or several, around.

Here's what to do once you roll out of your campsite and head beyond the park gates.

1 - Day Trip to Parry Sound

Distance from Killbear Provincial Park - 35 km

Parry Sound is the natural jumping-off point for anyone camping at Killbear, and it rewards a full day of exploring.

Start with lunch at Henry's Harbour Restaurant.

Henry's has built a reputation well beyond the region for its fresh-caught fish and laid-back, dock-side atmosphere. There are two locations: Henry’s Harbour, located on the shores of Georgian Bay in the harbour of Parry Sound. The other is on Frying Pan Island, reachable only by boat. Making it the kind of lunch spot that turns into a story you tell people back home, part meal, part mini-adventure just to get there. We had the Pickerel with coleslaw, beans, and beer-battered chips, so good.

Sip your way through the local craft scene.

Trestle Brewing Company and Legend Spirits Co. are both worth a stop if you want to support local makers. Trestle pours a solid lineup of craft beer in a relaxed taproom setting, while Legend Spirits Co. offers a chance to sample small-batch spirits crafted right in the region. Both make for an easy, unhurried afternoon stop between other activities.

Wander through Tower Hill Heritage Garden.

If you need a break from the water, this garden is a peaceful, beautifully maintained green space with seasonal floral displays that change throughout the summer. It's a lovely spot for a slow walk, some photos, or just a quiet moment away from the campsite bustle. This is also the location of Parry Sound's 30m high observation tower, which provides stunning 360-degree views of the harbour and Georgian Bay

Pay tribute to a hometown legend at the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.

Parry Sound is the birthplace of hockey icon Bobby Orr, and this hall of fame celebrates his legacy and the sport's broader history in the region. Even if you're not a die-hard hockey fan, it's a genuinely interesting stop that captures a slice of small-town Canadian pride.

Cool off at Waubuno Beach.

A great option if you want a change of scenery from Killbear's own beaches, Waubuno offers calm, family-friendly waters right in town.

Finish with a stroll through downtown Parry Sound.

The downtown core is walkable and full of independent shops, cafés, and galleries. It's an easy way to cap off the day, grab an ice cream, and soak in the small-town charm that makes this whole region special.
