MacGregor Point Provincial Park is one of Ontario’s best RV camping parks.

When it comes to Ontario provincial parks that consistently deliver for campers, RVers, cyclists, and families alike, MacGregor Point Provincial Park quietly sits near the top of the list.

This park has been on our need-to-visit list for two decades, and finally, we can say we made it.

Located just south of the town of Port Elgin along the shores of Lake Huron, MacGregor Point combines easy-access camping with excellent cycling, diverse hiking trails, lakeside sunsets, and one of the best all-season campground setups in the Ontario Parks system.

This isn’t a rugged wilderness destination like Killarney or Algonquin Provincial Parks. Instead, MacGregor Point excels at something equally important:

It’s an incredibly easy park to enjoy.

And for many campers, especially like us RV travellers, that might matter more than remote adventure.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Excellent RV infrastructure

  • Big rig friendly

  • Great cycling opportunities

  • Year-round camping

  • Beautiful Lake Huron sunsets

Cons

  • Busy in summer

  • Limited wilderness feel

  • No dramatic hiking terrain

First Impressions: Clean, Organized, and Built for Camping

MacGregor Point immediately feels different from many Ontario parks.

The roads are wide. The campground loops are thoughtfully laid out. The facilities feel well-maintained. That said, our visit was in May, midweek, so we did not experience the summer crowds.

The park itself sits on a mix of:

  • Lake Huron shoreline

  • Wetlands and marshes

  • Forested trails

  • Open recreation spaces

The result is a park that feels active and social without becoming chaotic.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park Site

MacGregor Point Provincial Park Site #33. We loved the open cedar forests that made the site feel so spacious.

Camping at MacGregor Point: Built for Comfort

Camping is the main attraction here, and MacGregor Point does it exceptionally well.

The park features multiple campground loops with a wide range of site styles:

  • Electrical sites

  • Radio-free camping areas

  • Pull-through RV sites

  • Tent-friendly sites with good tree cover

  • Pet exercise areas are located at the day-use beach and in the Huron Campground shoreline.

Compared to older Ontario parks, the campground layout feels more spacious and functional. We found the sites to be roomy and with good privacy. We were on site 33, which has a nice mix of greenery for privacy and an open cedar forest that makes it feel larger than it is. Our 24-foot trailer fits easily, and the sight can accommodate a larger rig.

What Works Well

  • Easy-to-navigate roads

  • Good spacing in many loops

  • Mature trees and shade

  • Dated but clean washrooms and shower buildings

What to Expect

  • Popular loops book fast

  • Summer weekends are busy

  • Some areas feel more “RV park” than wilderness

This is not isolated backcountry camping, and it’s not trying to be.

Wate fill and dump station at MacGregor Point Provincial Park

Whether you’re coming or going with your RV, quality infrastructure makes it as easy as possible.

RV Camping at MacGregor Point: One of Ontario’s Best Setups

If you travel with an RV, trailer, camper van, or motorhome, MacGregor Point deserves a spot on your radar.

Honestly, this may be one of the best provincial parks in Ontario for RV camping.

Electrical Hookups

MacGregor Point offers a large number of:

  • 15-amp sites

  • 30-amp sites

No full-service hookups are available, but the electrical infrastructure is reliable and well distributed throughout the campground.

Electrical sites may require you to bring an extension cord to reach the outlet. Please check the distance to the outlet before making your reservation. Electrical cord rentals are not available.

Water Filling Stations

There are multiple water fill stations throughout the campground, making access to fresh water straightforward. There is a fill station as you enter the park; it is quite a way before the park office. Fill up here before checking in. If you go to the office first, you can fill up at the dump station, but you might have to wait in line for RVs to dump.

Sani-Dump Stations

MacGregor Point has well-organized dump-station access, and because the campground is designed for heavier RV use, traffic flow generally works well.

Expect Sunday mornings to still get busy, but less chaotic than many Ontario parks.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park - Big Rig Friendly?

Absolutely.

This is one of the easier provincial parks to navigate with:

  • Large fifth wheels

  • Class A motorhomes

  • Longer travel trailers

Why?

  • Wide campground roads

  • Gentler turns

  • Larger site options

  • Pull-through availability

Compared to tighter northern parks with rocky terrain and narrow loops, MacGregor Point feels low stress.

If you’re newer to RVing, this is a fantastic confidence-building park.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park, shoreline, beaches, and rocky shore.

At MacGregor Point Provincial Park, it’s all about the Lake Huron shoreline, and there’s so much to enjoy.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park - The Lake Huron Experience

The Lake Huron shoreline is one of MacGregor Point’s biggest strengths.

Unlike sandy beach-focused parks like Sandbanks Provincial Park, MacGregor Point’s shoreline is more natural and rugged in places, with:

  • Rocky sections

  • Boardwalk access

  • Marshland viewing areas

  • Sunset viewpoints

And the sunsets?

Classic Lake Huron gold-and-orange sunsets that keep people returning year after year.

Cycling at MacGregor Point Provincial Park

MacGregor Point Provincial Park is ideal for cycling. Most of the park’s trails permit bikes, and there are extra cycling opportunities outside the park.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park Cycling: One of the Park’s Biggest Advantages

MacGregor Point is outstanding for bikes.

The campground roads are easy to ride, and nearby cycling routes connect to the larger Saugeen Shores region.

This makes it ideal for:

  • Family cycling trips

  • E-bike riders

  • Campground cruising

  • Day rides into Port Elgin

One of the best features?
You can leave the truck parked for the weekend and explore almost everything by bike.

Hiking from boardwalks to rugged shoreline at MacGregor Point Provincial Park is not difficult but fun.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park Hiking Trails: Surprisingly Diverse

MacGregor Point isn’t known for dramatic elevation or huge lookouts, but the trail system is genuinely enjoyable. We found the hiking\walking in the park is very low-stress and enjoyable, particularly along the Lake Huron shore.

Top Trails

Tower Trail: A shorter trail with forest and wetland sections.

Boardwalk Trail: Classic marsh and wetland scenery with excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Shoreline Trail: Provides access to the Lake Huron shoreline and sunset views.

Old Shore Road Trail: A longer route perfect for cycling or walking.

The trail system works because it’s varied and accessible rather than difficult.

Bird wtching at MacGregor Point Provincial Park

Blinds along the Tower Trail increase the likelihood of spotting that elusive bird on your birding list.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park - Wildlife and Birding

MacGregor Point is a surprisingly good park for wildlife viewing. During our May visit, which is prime birding season, the sound of nature was nearly deafening.

The wetlands attract:

  • Migratory birds

  • Waterfowl

  • Turtles

  • Deer

  • There was an active bear in the park, but we didn’t see it

Birders especially love the park during spring and fall migration seasons.

It’s a quieter kind of nature experience than northern Ontario, but still rewarding.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park - Downsides to Consider

No park is perfect.

1. It’s Popular

Summer weekends book quickly, and the park can feel busy.

2. Limited “Epic” Scenery

You won’t find towering cliffs or dramatic landscapes here.

3. Less Wilderness Feel

This is a recreational campground environment first and foremost.

Who Is MacGregor Point Best For?

Perfect For:

  • RV travelers

  • Families

  • Cyclists

  • Beginner campers

  • Shoulder-season camping

Less Ideal For:

  • Backcountry enthusiasts

  • Remote wilderness seekers

  • Paddling-focused trips

Final Verdict: Is MacGregor Point Worth It?

Absolutely.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park may not have the dramatic reputation of Ontario’s iconic northern parks, but it delivers something many campers actually want more:

A comfortable, easy, reliable camping experience.

Creakingon Take:

This is one of Ontario’s best “just go camping” parks.

Bring the bikes. Bring the RV. Catch a Lake Huron sunset. Keep things simple.

And honestly? That’s what makes MacGregor Point so good.
